Morality is an utterly meaningless term unless defined as the good one does to others, the fulfilling of one's function in the sociopolitical whole.
Morality is one of the most important issues in the modern highly developed and complicated world. It is needed and it should be truthful. Today’s world can’t exist without morality, otherwise it would change into wan and fake one. Still the concept morality is to be defined accurately, because the risk of wrong treatment exists. Ursula Le Guin sees it in sociopolitical function fulfilling. Her character – Dr. Haber – carries this idea, but he is wrong in understanding: he just justify himself with the fact that he is a psychiatrist and mastering George’s abilities is a part of his work. And it results in negative consequences. Through such kind of events developing the author criticizes the utilitarian philosophy, which determines practical usage as a basis of morality.
I do know that it's wrong to force the pattern of things. It won't do. It's been our mistake for a hundred years. Don't you – don't you see?
Dr. Haber catches onto George’s phenomenal abilities and wants to make use of it. But every wish realizing implies also some negative outcomes. For Dr. Haber the aim is more important than the means of its achievement. He proclaims noble concepts and tends to freedom, however his understanding of the concept is wrong. George has to resist it. By his words the author appeal to real world. The number of threats to human existence increases as well as human irresponsibility rises. We used to our planet, we conquer it and use free its resources, according to Le Guin – for a hundred of years already. The author means everyone, regardless of position taken, should mind not only individual goals, but others welfare also.

George has been suffering from his dreams for four years. He takes drugs to ease it. He feels the fear though he has little knowledge how to fight against it, that’s why he escapes from it. At the same time, George recognizes that Dr. Haber will soon endanger all the people using his dreams, so George resists it. And then the understanding comes. It comes from the alien which reminds that the human’s inners side hides cognition and power. Soon George understands that all his fears were caused by the event that took place 4 years ago. He discovers he can control it and finish with his fear. The author emphasizes this universe inside every person. We sometimes may forget about it and become oppressed with circumstances, but still we have the power to overcome it.

Human relations and simple values take important place in the story. With the development of society people start to individualize working only for own benefit. The quick tempo of life doesn’t let us to devote some time to others. At one time or another 82 per cent of the population gets VTT, not to mention the 31 per cent that gets OTT. Probably the lack of time for communication and rest caused such high index of mental illnesses in fiction world. George, for the first sight, was not the person one would like to make friends with. Today the appearance is also of great importance. The author gives George another advantage: he is a person one can lean on. Heather spends time with him being attracted with this George’s feature. She finds a person inside of mass. Ursula Le Guin calls us not to forget about self-development, sincerity and power strength that make us alive. Not to be idealist it should be noticed that our appearance do has importance and we should improve it as well.
