The Lathe of Heaven Imagery

Sound filling

She strode south, click clack, pincers snapping, to the Pendleton Building, and called him from her office. First at Bradford Industries (no, Mr. Orr didn't come in today, no, he hasn't called in), then at his residence (ring. ring. ring.). Using phone answers and signals and imitation of sounds, the author substitutes simple report about actions and provides the fragment with additional expressiveness. Picturing the sounds Miss Lelache creates, Ursula Le Guin makes up a sound net (adding to the image of Black Widow) that reappears in the story for several times. It often substitutes some features of Heather that would probably be described. Phone calling answers add to the George’s looking-for.

Candid Laugh

He laughed. His teeth were white, and his laugh pleasant, breaking through dishevelment and confusion. George has to carry a heavy load. Despite of this he continue fighting. When he steps back Heather comes to give a hand. She doesn’t anything especial – a simple talk helps George to forget for a while about troubles and instead smile sincerely. It seems beautiful to Heather. We also need support sometimes, which comes usually from friends and relatives. They often help us and encourage not to give up.

Great Nature

She went to the door and stood half inside, half outside for a while, listening to the creek shouting and hollering eternal praise! eternal praise! It was incredible that it had kept up that tremendous noise for hundreds of years before she was even born, and would go on doing it until the mountains moved. The world is much bigger and brighter than we may imagine. But we may often be too much loaded with business so that in hurry we may lose something beautiful. It doesn’t mean we should leave everything and wait for that moment. The author says that we should add it to our daily activity. The nature described in this fragment is really majestic and Heather is so small in comparison. And people are the owners of this greatness. So we should treat it in a respectable way.
