The Onion (Metaphor)
Layer after layer might peel off the onion and yet nothing be revealed but more onion. In this way the author speaks about Dr. Haber’s lie. For George it was as bitter as onion, because he needed help but didn’t get it. George wishes Haber’s behavior to change. Though this change may be caused by Haber’s great power. So this may appeal to our relations – lie can help to achieve success, but it will never help to make good relations.
The Baby (Metaphor)
“Just hooking a new ergismatch into Baby's hormocouple. Half a mo.” Dr. Haber is a real scientist. He has a great potential and realizes it in his ‘baby’ – the Augmentor. Surely, it was the main creation in his life. The closer he gets to his aim, the more important his apparatus becomes to him. He doesn’t leave it even when facing death! Though, he is absorbed with the aim and doesn’t see how his device gulfs him. We should be ambitious as well as aware of real values and goals.
Life is great (Simile)
There was a faint smell, sweetish, like newly cut grass. (…)"Ain't it great to be alive?" At the very beginning of the story the author gives us hardly noticeable but still expressive manifestation of human being. The main character has almost died and now this sweet smell brings him back to life. Such kind of rhetorical question makes us think of the great chance and a gift of life. The main character catches the last straw to stay alive. We should also remember that our life is valuable and use all the opportunities it gives us.
