Why does the author switch to third person omniscient to describe the Benefit?
Stockett uses third person omniscient so readers can see everything that happens. No single narrator could have described all of the events of the Benefit because they only experienced certain parts of it. The narration switch provides us distance to have some perspective on the Benefit. It also signals to readers that something important is happening. Readers are better able to empathize with Celia because there's no preconceived judgement from a first person narrator.
