Rules for Writing a Scary Story
Kind of Activity:
Individual Writing
Objective:
Students will analyze stories and consider elements of the short story genre.
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.3
Structure:
Before the activity, gather 2-4 scary short stories for students to read. Consider one or all of the following stories.
· “A Haunted House” by Virginia Woolf
· A selection from Ghost Summer: Stories by Tananarive Due
· “The Grownup” by Gillian Flynn
· “Royal Jelly” by Roald Dahl
· “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury
· “The Hand” by Guy de Maupassant
Have students read 2-3 of the stories for homework. Encourage them to annotate each...
