Why does each of the participants go to Hill House? What characteristics or events tie them together?

Eleanor is chosen to go to Hill House because when she was a child, after her father died, stones rained down on her house for several days. This supernatural experience caused Dr. Montague to reach out to her. Theodora has an ability to be able to tell which cards someone is holding without being able to see or hear the person holding the cards.
