How is family life different for the Wallses in Welch than it was in Phoenix?
The family loses most of its sense of unity in Welch. Dad is upset by being near his parents and brother, and his drinking becomes worse; Mom is depressed and isolated; the kids are suffering from their own troubles and struggle to connect with each other. Dad's grand plans used to seem like exciting dreams, just out of reach; now they seem impossible. Because they don't feel like they can get up and move in the same way they did out west, the Walls's misery and starvation has begun to feel like a permanent condition.
