Originally published in 1993 by Tor Books, The Fires of Heaven is the fifth of fourteen books in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series. The fantasy novel focuses on Couladin Rand Al'thor, who leads several Aiel clans after being recognized as the Chief of Chiefs. Rand's goal as the Car'a'carn is to win the trust of four additional clans so that the group can defeat their enemies.
Robert Jordan is the pen name of American author James Oliver Rigney Jr. Best known for his Wheel of Time series, Rigney began writing in 1977 after serving for the United States Army in the Vietnam War. He attended The Citadel Military College in South Carolina, where received a degree in physics. Rigney has also written some of the original Conan the Barbarian novels, which were initially created by Robert Howard.
