The Ethics (Spinoza) Irony

The Ethics (Spinoza) Irony

Dramatic irony: Conatus and emotions

Spinoza conveys the notion of emotions such as anger and sadness being propellants for the striving of the self. Indeed, this concept came to play out in his own life when he endured expulsion from the Jewish community for his outspoken comments.

Dramatic irony: God and the Body

Despite alluding to the idea that God cannot have human traits and is instead a part of humanity through nature, in Spinoza’s earlier life he stated that he believed God had a body and this labelled him as a heretic and had him ostracized from the Jewish community.
