The Darkest Road Themes

The power of an alliance

Kim, Matt, and Ruana know that the only way they can defeat the Evil Rakoth is by forming an alliance with other armies to form a strong resistance. Kim lures the Paraiko giant's army to join her team. In addition, the mass armies under the leadership of King Aileron join Kim's soldiers to form a formidable force against Rakoth. The reader learns that Kim is a tactical woman warrior because she comes up with a plan to ensure the armies within the alliance work towards a similar objective: defeat Rakoth. Rakoth's army attacks fiercely when the war begins, but Kim and her team do not despair. At last, Kim's team emerges victorious; this is the first time Rakoth is defeated. Therefore, forming an alliance is a powerful strategy that can move mountains.

Breaking the Paraiko ritual

Breaking the Paraiko ritual is another significant theme Kay discusses in the book's initial chapters. Paraiko is a peace-loving community that does not want to be involved in a conflict. However, Ruana and Kim believe the only way they can win the war against Rakoth is by having the Paraiko giants on board. According to Ruana, the only way to convince Paraiko to be violent is by destroying their pacifist nature, which is achievable only by performing a howling and forgiveness ritual. Ruana performs the ritual successfully, and he manages to break to influence the Paraiko to forget about the magic of the blood curse that has protected them for years.

The conflict between good and evil

The theme that is dominant throughout the book is the conflict between good and evil. Kim and her friends are on the side of good, while Darien and Rakoth are on the side of evil. There are supremacy battles to control the world. For a long time, evil has dominated, but Kim and her colleagues are unhappy with this trend because they believe good should prevail over evil. Therefore, there are endless wars, but the good side keeps losing until the last chapters, where they ally to defeat evil.
