The Darkest Road Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The ritual of lamentation

The ritual of lamentation symbolizes the Paraiko's passive personality and the blood curse that shields them. The Paraiko are peace-loving people who do not want to be involved in any conflict. However, Ruana, the leader of Kim and Mat, chants Kanior to invoke the ritual of lamentation, which in turn influences the Paraiko to fight against Maugrin. The invocation is so strong to the extent all Paraiko people lose their pacifism and the mysterious blood curse that had protected them for centuries.

Circlet of Lisen

The Circlet of Lisen symbolizes evil. When Kim visits the cottage of Ysanne, she meets Darien. Kim wants to know if Darien has changed to be a good man and hands him the Circlet of Lisen to put it on. However, after Darien wears the Circlet of Lisen, the light on it goes off, signifying that Darien is evil and the enemy of the good people. When Darien sees the signal, he runs away from Kim, fearing that Kim's people will kill him.

Jennifer is a symbol of protection.

Jennifer is Darien's mother, and she symbolizes protection. Jennifer knows Darien is in danger, so she commands Lancelot to protect him. One person who wants to kill Darien is Prydwen, Darien's father. When Darien discovers that Kim knows he is evil, he runs to the Lisen tower, where he meets his mother, Jennifer. Darien's mother tells him to choose between converting to a good person, but he already knows that the Circlet has identified him as evil; therefore, he decides to run away from the tower. Jennifer sends Lancelot to protect Darien at all times.
