Thomas Kennerly Wolfe, Jr., was born on March 2, 1931, in Richmond, Virginia, to parents Thomas Kennerly and Helen (Hughes) Wolfe. He completed his undergraduate education at Washington and Lee University in 1951 and subsequently pursued a doctorate in American studies at Yale University, which he attained in 1957. In 1978, Wolfe entered matrimony with Sheila Berger, who served as the art director at Harper's magazine. The couple welcomed two children into their family: Alexandra and Thomas.
