Objective:
Students will analyze and compare novels and films that critique the excesses of 1980s New York City.
Structure:
Begin this activity by discussing the cultural and social context of the 1980s in New York City, highlighting the themes of excess, wealth, social inequality, and materialism. Ask students to think about what associations they have with this period: what books or movies take place in 1980s New York? How do those works compare to the way we see the city now?
