When Eesher appeared in front of Kalwant neither of them spoke for a while, but the silence became so intolerable that Kalwant could not bear it and “finally broke the silence”. Metaphorically speaking, she started speaking first and made the silence leave.

In the conversation between Eesher and Kalwant, the phrase “deal the cards” (which means “to have sex”) appears often. This probably is their own ciphered phrase which they use to not directly designate the act.

Eesher wanted to please Kalwant and make her less angry by making advances to her. All his attempts seemed pretty successful as “Kalwant Kaur melted like hot wax” or “started to boil like a hot pot on a blazing stove”. Such similes show that Eesher managed to please Kalwant, but unfortunately he could not perform physically farther.

When Sirajuddin woke up in the camp, he was bewildered by everything happening about him – noise, shouts, women, men, children. The impressions of the last night were dreadful, and even if he seemed very concerned “his mind, however, was blank.” It means that he tried to forget.
