"Thanda Gosht" and Other Stories

"Thanda Gosht" and Other Stories Analysis

Manto’s writings are replete with black humor, irony and satire. He seems to be chuckling at the hypocrisy of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs. They all cheated the people of the other religions, raped and murdered them and they did not even spare the people of their own religions. Manto has stated that the partition of sub-continent was achieved through mass slaughter, brutal killings, rapes and suicides. The trains were burnt, religious places were dashed, and the humans were sliced like vegetables.

The story ‘Khol Do’, depicts the hypocrisy of the social workers during the process of migration. They raped Sakina and concealed the news that they have found her. She was in a terrible condition when she was brought to the hospital. Manto has given an account of the circumstances faced by people during the partition of Pakistan and India. His sketches demonstrate the violence, trauma, anxiety and the painful experiences. Manto has also highlighted the issues of identity in his stories.

Manto has also highlighted the false religious beliefs and the ignorance of people. In one of the black margins, ‘Miracle Man’, Manto has shown how ignorant people were, regarding the religious beliefs. A man dragged the sacks of sugar in the neighborhood well because of the fear of raid by the police. He also fell into the well while pushing the shaft. The people of neighborhood woke up because of his screams. He was rescued but he died after a few yours. When the people drew water from the well after his death, the water was sweet. The sweetness in water led them to make a shrine of the ‘miracle man’ on the well. The ignorance of people is evident from the story that they started illuminating lamps and praying just because the water was sweet and the man was considered as a miracle by God.
