Chapter 8 - Potential Energy and Conservation of Energy - Problems - Page 208: 72b

Answer

.036

Work Step by Step

In this problem, we use the Law of Conservation of Energy. We are assuming that all of the energy that is lost between the beginning and the end of the problem is lost to friction. (In real life, however, this is not a valid assumption as other forces, such as drag, would also cause energy to be lost). Thus, we set the total amount of energy lost equal to the work done by friction. In the picture above, we plug in the known values into the equation to obtain the answer.
