Answer
Coils at the top support more of the spring than those at the bottom, but if a heavy weight is suspended at the bottom, those differences become relatively small. All the coils will be supporting nearly the same weight. Though the top of the spring may be stretched more than the bottom, the differences will be much less noticeable.
