"Sunshine State" and Other Stories Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The Look

When she is determined to change her course of life, to make a life-changing decision Ramses has what she calls the Look. The symbolism of the Look is about making herself her mirror - the mirror of what she would feel in ten years. The implication is to live without fear and regrets, and bravely making big steps in life. The story ends with this look as well.

An Omen

The story begins with Ramses discovering the Myth. Her discovery is followed by a sunny day, but with dark clouds in the distance. She describes it as an omen, a sign of a storm to come, the literal and the storm that will change her life. The story ends with the same mention of the omen, but the omen at the end of the story looks more life a promise instead of a threat. “The sun would shine strong all day. An omen. A promise.”

The effects of climate change

The story portrays a futuristic world where the effects of climate change are strongly present and tangible. The motif of climate change is shown through the rising of the sea level, the unrelenting heat, and the change of lifestyle. It is also shown through the work of the Myth, where an active effort is being made to save the ecosystem and fight air pollution.

The Myth

The name of the movement, the Myth comes from an accidental misspelling of the acronym MTHS which stands for “magnificent temple to the human spirit”. The name of the moment is in complete contrast to the true scientific work behind the movement, and could be interpreted as a symbolic jab at the world of today and those who deny climate change by calling it a myth.
