"Sunshine State" is a short story contained in the 2016 anthology called "Everything Change." This collection is made up of stories written by the finalists of the 2018 Climate Fiction Contest.
"Everything Change" includes stories inspired by the issue of climate change. This new genre of "climate fiction" is something that is becoming increasingly popular, given the urgency of climate change and global warming. According to the co-author of Sunshine State, Andrew Dana Hudson, "these texts crack open the ominous cloudbank of our coming planetary storm, so that we may feel, just a bit ahead of schedule, the driving rain on our face or the sun, hot through the greenhouse air."
As we might expect, these stories often paint a dire picture of the future, warning what might happen if we don't pay more global attention to climate change. For example, in "Sunshine State," the rising of the sea level is presented as a tangible and frightening problem that the characters must face. This being said, "Sunshine State" also shows how an individual can make a positive contribution, creating change that will impact everybody. Ultimately, this is symbolized by the development of Ramses and her involvement in "The Myth."
