Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1952, Orhan Pamuk grew up in a big family. His dedication to art began in childhood. Pamuk began as a painter, but after graduating from American Robert College, a secular university in Istanbul, and then dropping out of Istanbul Technical University after three years of studying architecture, he went on to graduate from Istanbul University with a degree in journalism. His studies aside, at age 23, Pamuk decided to leave all of his previous passions behind to become a novelist.
