Yasunari Kawabata was born in Osaka, Japan in 1899. His parents died when he was young, so he was raised by his maternal grandfather. Being orphaned young may be part of the reason for the themes of loneliness and death that echo throughout his work. He co-founded Bungei Jidai, which was a literary magazine that published modern Japanese pieces. Kawabata’s first published work was “Izu dancer,” a short story that was published in 1927.
