What are the signs of imbalance in Komako and Shimamura’s relationship?

There are several signs that Komako and Shimamura are not equals. First, and perhaps most obvious, is the nature of the geisha and patron relationship. It is inherently imbalanced because Komako is purchased. She is hesitant to be seen in public with him in part because of this dynamic. Second, on a more personal level, Komako points out that Shimamura hides things from her, while she is incredibly vulnerable. She complains that she cannot know what he is really thinking.
