Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Quotes

Quotes

"'Anyway, I thought it might interest you that my brother is gay.'"

Martin Addison

Martin says this after he finds Simon's emails to Blue on the library computer. Martin knows Simon's secrets, and throughout the book, proceeds to blackmail Simon. Martin blackmails Simon by threatening to release the emails if Simon doesn't set Martin up with Abby.

"He lives in Shady Creek, and he goes to our school. Blue isn't his real name. He's someone. He may even be someone I know. But I don't know who. And I'm not sure I want to know."

Simon Spier in narration

This quote is Simon's knowledge of Blue at the beginning of the book. Simon has a desperate yearning to know who Blue is, as he wants to know that person who he trusts with his deepest secrets. However, if he finds out who Blue is, Simon will have to come out to his friends and family; Simon is afraid to come out.

"Martin Addison doesn't exist in this kind of moment. Secrets don't exist."

Simon Spier in narration

Simon is hanging out with his friends and it makes him feel as he has no care in the world. Secrets, like Simon's sexuality, don't exist in this moment.

"'Obviously, the theme of the dream is vision. What am I not seeing? What are my blind spots?'"

Nick

Simon's best friend Nick had a dream of putting the wrong pair of contacts in. He comes up with a theory that he is not seeing something that is right there in front of him. This is ironic, because Simon is still in the closet, and Nick does not see that Simon is gay.

"White shouldn’t be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default."

Simon Spier in narration

Simon thinks it is unfair that certain races or sexualities are the default. Simon will be bullied and discriminated against for his entire life because his sexuality is not the default, and that is extremely unfair.

"Bram was right: people really are like houses with vast rooms and tiny windows. And maybe it’s a good thing, the way we never stop surprising each other."

Simon Spier in narration

This quote has an extremely deep meaning. This quote means that people have so much to them, but they only let other people see small parts of them. And this can be a good thing, because people will never stop surprising each other; new things are the key to keeping friendships and all kinds of relationships fresh.
