Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Background

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, the debut novel of author Becky Albertalli, was published in 2015. The novel follows the story of Simon Spier, who is a high school boy insecure about his gayness. Throughout this coming-of-age novel, Simon must reveal to all of his friends and family about this.

In this book, Simon finds out that there is one other gay person at his school, under the code name of "Blue." He is initially attracted by their similar opinions, such as Oreos and insecurity. Neither know who the other is, but they continue to chat through email. Then, someone finds this and blackmails Simon; Simon follows this blackmailer for fear of being exposed to the entire school. Blue and Simon must meet and choose to either publicize their relationship, or keep it private.

This book is the basis for the movie Love, Simon. A sequel to this book is Leah on the Offbeat, which concentrates on Leah rather than Simon. This book has won many awards, including the William C. Morris Award, National Book Award, Goodreads Choice Award, Lincoln Award Nominee, and the Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Award Nominee.
