Shakespeare Behind Bars Imagery

Shakespeare Behind Bars Imagery

Clouds

We see a barbed wire fence standing still as clouds rapidly pass over it. This imagery shows that the world and time are passing by, moving, but the prison walls stand firm. It represents the world moving as the inmates remain in the same place as they serve their sentence.

Bitter Batter

We see wide shots of prisoners in the yard working out, moving through the prison. We then see a small room away from everyone where the men working on The Tempest are doing speech exercises. The imagery shows that these inmates are choosing to set themselves apart from the crowd.

Wire

The camerawork presents birds sitting on barbed wire. This imagery represents the imprisonment of these men, and how the freedom they all seek is so close and yet very far away.

Stirring

We see a close up up Hal stirring his coffee vigorously. The imagery represents what is inside of him still about his wife's death, which he committed.
