Shakespeare Behind Bars

Shakespeare Behind Bars Analysis

The film reveals the parallels of Shakespeare's characters in The Tempest to the inmates in Luther Luckett Correctional Complex. But, the audience can parallel the lives of the inmates to their own. How do we deal with the wrong we have done in our lives? How do we respond to the wrong that was done to us? These pertinent questions are raised in this documentary. We see the human beings behind the crimes. We come to have the opportunity to care for these men prior to knowing their crimes.

This is a major emphasis for this story. As an audience, would we care for these men the same way if we didn't know their crimes? And are we as human beings who've committed crimes able to be redeemed? The answer lies within each individual as the answer is different for everyone. But, this film reveals to us that there is common ground, in Shakespeare there is a place where we can seek the deeper meaning of life in particular circumstances in order to determine if this life we are living compares with the lives of the characters that were written centuries before. In a world chalked full of judgement it is laid down in order to pursue something uncertain in the hopes of finding certainty - certainty for some in finishing something for the first time, for others certainty about who they are and ultimately certainty about their lives having meaning and being able to be redeemed.
