Ruth Forman: Poetry Themes

Body positivity

In her poetry, Forman often promotes female body positivity. This is a key theme of her poem "These hips," in which she celebrates her body, despite the fact bodies like hers are not often celebrated in the media. For example, she describes her hips as being "ripe plums," thereby depicting them in a positive light.

Religion

Forman's poetry is influenced by religion, and she often discusses her own religious faith. For example, in the poem "Prayers like shoes," she describes how often she prayers in her daily life, from waking up in the morning, to eating and brushing her teeth. She describes how her faith has almost become a matter of habit for her and is a key part of her life.

Standing up

Forman's poem "Stand," is challenges people to "stand up," to racial injustices in society, rather than sitting down and letting it happen. She uses the metaphor of sitting down and standing up to differentiate people who actively fight racism and those who allow it to continue.
