"Why so afraid to stand up?
someone will tell you
sit down?"
In her poem "Stand," Forman challenges people who do not stand up against injustices in society, for fear of being told they are wrong. She challenges this way of thinking, encouraging people to stand up for what they believe is right, especially in regard to racial prejudice and discrimination.
"These hips ripe plums"
In her poem "These hips," Forman promotes body positivity, telling her readers that just because their body type is not promoted in the media, doesn't mean they are not beautiful.
"Sit up in bed
pull on the right
then the left
before shower before teeth."
In the poem "Prayers like shoes," Forman compares praying to putting on a pair of shoes. She describes how much she prays in a day; in this passage, she explains how she prays in the morning before her shower, and before she brushes her teeth.
