Ruth Forman: Poetry Summary

Stand

The short poem revolves around the narrator asking the audience why they do not stand up. This is a reference to lack of support that the black community faces by people of other backgrounds. The narrator implies it is far easier to keep quiet and “sit down” than speak up for what is right.

Prayers like shoes

This poem revolves around the narrator using prayer everyday of her life to get by. The narrator states that even the most mundane of activities, such as showering or brushing one’s teeth, involves her making a prayer.

These Hips

‘These Hips’ is a reference to the celebration of the African/Black woman’s body. The narrator is bringing body positivity to the non-standard beauty definitions of society. The narrator is clearly depicting a woman’s body as being more than what one see’s perpetuated in the media.
