Ruth Forman: Poetry Characters

Ruth Forman: Poetry Character List

Aienka

Aienka is the character from the poem "Aienka with the colors." She crushes blueberries, the little ones; she likes to wear blackberry lipstick when her momma not looking. She is Aienka with the colors somewhere between sunset and dusk.

Momma

In the poem "A Dragonfly's Wing, the speaker of the poem is addressing her momma, which presumably passed away, and she reflects how they sang in the kitchen and how she's not used to the summertime without her.

Poetry

In the poem "Poetry should ride the bus," poetry is personified and the speaker of the poem tells how poetry should hopscotch in a polka dress, or how it should dress in fine linen suits. The meaning of the poem is to redefine poetry and find poetic inspiration everywhere.

The speaker of the poem

The speaker of the poem is a character in a number of the poems. At some instances the speaker isn't a part of the poem, but an indirect observer that provides criticism on the topic, like in the poem "White Flower Day", and other times the speaker is a part of the poem, talking from own experience, like in the poem "3:59".
