On the Way to the Wedding Themes

Unrequited love

Though Gregory believes in true love, he is naïve in thinking that love is an easy journey. He believes he can simply woo Hermione and she will immediately fall in love with him, which comes as a nasty shock to him when it proves to be untrue. Once Hermione is compromised, Gregory struggles to deal with losing who he thinks is the love of his life and instead turns to alcohol to numb his pain.

Unexpected love

Gregory believes he has found love in the form of the beautiful Miss Hermione Watson, simply because she is physically attractive. However, after spending time with her less attractive but infinitely kind-hearted best friend, Lucy, he realizes that it is actually she who he has romantic feelings for. The reaction to her after they kiss is both confusing and life changing as he realizes what he has been looking for was in front of him the entire time.

Society

When Gregory crashes Lucy’s wedding and confesses his love to her publicly, only to be rejected, he realizes that his life in England is over. His mother tells him he must leave to travel as he has been socially ruined and will be the topic of all gossip for the remainder of his life. It is clear that no one, not even the members of the ton, are free from society’s rules and elitism.
