On the Way to the Wedding Background

On the Way to the Wedding is a historical romance novel written by Julia Quinn and is the eighth and final book in the Regency-set Bridgeton series. The book series charts the romantic pursuits of the eight siblings in the Bridgeton household from the Regency era. It was published on July 6, 2006, by Avon books. It made the New York Times Bestseller List reaching number 5 and was RITA Award winner for Best Long Historical Romance in 2007.

The book follows the youngest son and the last single sibling of the family as he seeks love and marriage. He instantly falls in love with Hermione Watson – or so he thinks – and enlists Lucy’s help to win her affection. In the process of winning her heart, Gregory and Lucy fall in love which poses a new predicament similar to the one he had before with Hermione. The conflict emerges from the fact that Lucy is not available and is already romantically involved with someone else.

This final treatment of the series has been hailed by critics with Jill Barnett asserting, “Julia Quinn is truly our contemporary Jane Austen.” The book closes the lifelong story of the Bridgeton siblings over the course of several years. NPR Books stated “Quinn is . . . a romance master. [She] has created a family so likable and attractive, a community so vibrant and engaging, that we want to crawl into the pages and know them.”
