"I wasn't what they were looking for. One said women are too emotional to be lawyers."
This is what Ruth says to her husband when he asks about her recent job interviews. Despite excelling at everything she puts her mind to, Ruth still struggled to get a job at a law firm after graduation. This overall reveals the sexism inherent in the legal system at the time.
"The word woman does not appear even once in the US constitution"
"Nor does the word freedom, your honor."
At the court case, a governor tells Ruth that the word "woman" does not appear in the constitution, in an attempt to discredit her. However, Ruth responds that the word "freedom" also doesn't appear in the constitution, which shows his argument is flawed.
"The law assumes a caregiver has to be a woman. This is sex-based discrimination against a man."
Here, Ruth is speaking about the case Moritz vs. Commissioner. In this case, a man is challenging the fact that he did not receive a tax deduction as a caregiver. As such, Ruth sees an opportunity here to challenge sex-based discrimination in the law.
