On the Basis of Sex Irony

On the Basis of Sex Irony

Top of the class

Despite the fact that Ruth was the most talented student of her class, finishing with the best grades, she was unable to get a job at a law firm.

The Case

Moritz vs. Commissioner was chosen as the best case to pursue because it shows how the law discriminated against men on the basis of sex. Ironically, this is the only case Ruth thought the government would consider.

A meager settlement

In the end, the government tries to offer Moritz a settlement of only one dollar. This is an ironic settlement, revealing their disdain for Moritz and his cause.

Moritz

Moritz was refused a tax deduction for nursing care due to the fact he was a man. This is an example of where discrimination in the law affected men negatively as well as women.

Martin and Ruth

Ruth did most of Martin's notes for him while studying due to his bad health. However, because she was female she struggled to get a job after graduating, but Martin got one easily.
