Art Spiegelman, a New York-based cartoonist, was born in Stockholm on February 15th, 1948, to two Jewish-Polish Holocaust survivors. The Spiegelmans relocated to the United States in 1951, eventually settling in Rego Park, Queens, New York, in 1957. Art began work as a professional artist at the age of 15. He attended Harpur College (now Binghamton University) for two years, but dropped out in 1968 following a nervous breakdown. Shortly afterward, his mother committed suicide.
Spiegelman has for decades been a preeminent figure in American comics. Along with his wife, Francoise Mouly, he created and served as co-editor of the avant-garde comic series, RAW (Real Art Works) from 1980-1991....
