Vladek says this to Art after Art tries to convince him to do away with the food that Mala left. Vladek seems to have always been fastidious by nature, and, as Art tells Francoise, all of Vladek and Anja's friends were survivors, and no one was quite like this. Thus, Vladek sees his habits as entirely influenced by the war, but that may not be the case.
