Parenting
This theme is made most obvious through the role of the narrator. Though we, the readers, do not know of the narrator’s relationship with Marvin, it can be inferred that they are some sort of parental figure or guardian to him. The way that they shout at Marvin to leave is similar to the way a parent would tell their child off and send them to their rooms.
Freedom to Choose
Throughout the story, the narrator offers up various options for Marvin to leave. The options on offer, however, are unappealing to Marvin and so he ignores them all. Ultimately, Marvin makes his own decision and chooses an option that the narrator does not even offer – simply walking away!
Pressure
This is a subtle theme running in the backgrounds of the story. The narrator continuously repeats the word “Go” and the word gets bolder and bigger as the story goes on. This is resembling the mounting pressure on Marvin to do as he is told – and, eventually, he does succumb to it and leave.
