What is Seuss’ underlying message in the story?
The main message of the story is to convey a sense of choice. Young people reading the story may often feel that they do not have a choice in matters. Parents often make decisions for children of a young age. However, Marvin represents the freedom young people have, when he chooses to ignore all of the narrators’ options and simply walk away. -

How is Marvin depicted in the story?
From the narrator’s viewpoint, Marvin seems to be a bit of a nuisance. He likes to defy instructions, as seen by his refusal to leave. Moreover, the narrator has to coerce Marvin into leaving by disclosing exciting and fun ways he can do so, yet he is still unimpressed and refuses to do so. -

What role does the narrator play?
The narrator is a metaphor for parenting. Though it is not disclosed who the figure is in relation to Marvin, it is clear they have an authoritarian role and seem to be telling him off for not leaving when they ask.
