Logan (2017 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Symbol: Wolverine's Claws

Wolverine's Claws are one of the most iconic images in film history. They are symbolic not only of Wolverine's long and storied past, but of the violence and pain and suffering he is capable of - and has - inflicting.

Symbol: X-24

The X-24, which is a copy of a younger Wolverine, is symbolic of Wolverine's storied and violent past, as well as his profound importance to the world.

Symbol: Laura

Like X-24, Laura is symbolic of Logan's profound importance to the world. She is also symbolic of the profound impact of science and how has impacted the world - both good and bad.

Motif: Returning to the Past

The motif of returning to the past is prevalent in Logan. For example, there are comic books that pop up in the film which remind Logan of his past. The mutants also cut Logan's beard in a way that is reminiscent of his previous looks.

This motif symbolizes Logan's return to his heroic roots, heroic roots which he had long abandoned. The motif also evokes in viewers - and Logan himself - a sense of nostalgia.

Allegory: Immigration

Logan is an allegory for immigration. This is exemplified by the mutants from Transigen’s Mexico City facility. Those mutants illuminate the continued failures of the immigration system (that those who really need help can't get it) and give those who need help faces - in this case, the faces of innocent children.
