Obviously, I miscalculated a few things.
The movie starts with the scene where Eddie Morra is contemplating jumping from the balcony of his apartment, with his own voice narrating the story and immersing the viewer into the movie by immediately showing the after-scene where something went wrong in his calculations. The purpose of starting with a scene from the middle of the movie is to raise anticipation and interest into what got the character there.

This question is raised by the voice of the character Eddie Morra in several places in the movie, the obvious purpose being to immerse the viewer and put the viewer in character's shoes. Such moments also make the viewer question his own possible decisions if given a magical life-changing pill.

In his conversation with Van Loom, the successful businessman looks down upon Eddie as a new face on the stage of stock market business. He calls him delusional, having only delusions of grandeur, to which Eddie replies that he has a recipe for it. The interesting thing about this and many other scenes is Eddie's giving hints for the actual source of his success, which brings a mischievous flare to his character.
