Plot and Theme Analysis

Objective:
Students will analyze the plot and themes of the novel
Structure:
Ask the class to create a definition for 'theme' and offer a few common examples. Theme: a central idea, message, or lesson present in a given work. Model themes include love, death, and good vs. evil, though literary themes are typically more sophisticated and nuanced than these.
Break the students into small groups and explain that they will be analyzing different parts of the novel in preparation for their final analysis of the themes present in Like Water for Chocolate.
