Mama Elena reacts quickly when Rosalio warns them of the approaching troops. The women slaughter and hide 20 chickens. Tita, Chencha, and a pig are then hidden in the cellar while Mama Elena and the two female farm hands arm themselves and wait for the soldiers. Mama Elena refuses to allow the troops into her home but says they take whatever they want from outside the ranch. When the soldiers are disappointed to only find eight chickens and accuse her of hiding more inside, she shoots one of the chickens and threatens the captain with how good her aim is.
