Why does Christmas make a point to let Mrs. McEachern know that he is stealing from her and that she cannot give him the money he is stealing?
Christmas does this to make sure Mrs. McEachern doesn't rob his rebellion of its power. Christmas both detests the social hierarchies that have alienated him, but he also feels compelled to maintain them so that way he can transgress them in a meaningful way. If Mr. McEachern is suddenly judged to be an unjust and unfit father and Mrs. McEachern to treat Christmas with generosity, she would be preventing him from being able to contend with McEachern and society in a meaningful way.
