Michael Ondaatje was born in 1943 in Sri Lanka and is a Canadian novelist and poet. When he was 19 years old, he moved to Montreal to get a bachelor’s in English from the University of Toronto and a master’s from Queen’s University. In 1967, his first collection of poetry, The Dainty Monsters, was published. Secular Love, The Cinnamon Peeler, and Handwriting: Poems are some of his other poetry collections. His prose is better known, and it is evident in his novels that his poetic skills are strong. Coming Through Slaughter was his first novel, which was published in 1976.
