Il Divo Themes

Corruption

Andreotti's time as Prime Minister was marked with corruption through bribery, murder, and aligning his political power with the interests of big business. The corruption lasted for seven terms before he was finally beaten in the race for his 8th term as Premier in Italy. The film carries through the bribery scandal that caused so many of Andreotti's constituents to commit suicide for fear of being caught up in the scandal and going to prison.

Power

The theme of power is expressed in the ability to keep it for Andreotti. He is the Prime Minister of Italy and in order to remain in power he surrounds himself with men who are willing to do violent things so that his interests of being Prime Minister will remain. Thus, power to Andreotti is aligning himself with anyone able to keep him in office, including those who commit murder.

Change

This film is also about change. The reality that many of the people who are in power at the top believe that change can only come through the use of violence. Which eventually leads to more violence and corruption to an end that is out of control. Eventually, Andreotti's term ends and once it does change begins to occur in the form of a new Premier and also people who kept their mouths shut for a very long time now begin to speak about everything that has happened. The truth begins to bring change for the newly elected Premier and the people of Italy.
