Il Divo Summary

The film begins with Andreotti seen with acupuncture needles in his face, a treatment he is using in order to rid himself of the constant migraines he has had for years. He tells of how a doctor once told him he had 6 months to live. Andreotti beat that diagnosis and returned to the doctor to tell him only to find the doctor was himself dead. He says that everyone has believed he will die, but like the doctor he has outlived all of his political opponents. Andreotti is moving towards his 7th term as Prime Minister in Italy. We watch as multiple high level and influential people are murdered without explanation before Andreotti wins his 7th term and is re-elected.

We learn that Andreotti has surrounded himself with a notorious faction of men in the Christian Democracy party who help him to maintain his power and they help him to keep his votes to remain as Prime Minister. As the story unfolds Andreotti moves towards his 8th term as Prime Minister which he loses. Once he is out as Premier an investigation into the corruption during his term is underway, and many people connected to Andreotti begin to commit suicide for fear of going to jail for the things they've done. Andreotti stands firm as people begin to link him to the murders seen previously in the film. Andreotti goes under investigation and eventually is called to trial for his connection to the mafia.

The film ends with Andreotti walking into the first trial which he is acquitted of all charges. In subsequent appeals and cases and appeals to those cases Andreotti goes free of all charges including mafia conspiracy and murder. He was sentenced to 24 years in prison, but was later acquitted of all charges. All of this happens after he was made Senator for life.
