Before the death of her parents, Louise is living a seemingly nice and tranquil life. After she learns of her parents’ tragic death, Louise is hesitant to return to her hometown. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter and doesn’t want to travel back to Charleston. The thought of dealing with her family home, which filled to the brim with her parent’s possessions, is overwhelming. At the same time, she knows that she must deal with her parent’s death. She doesn’t think she is ready to cope with the loss of her two parents, who are the two people in the world that loved her the most.
More than anything though, she isn’t looking forward to dealing with her brother Mark, who struggles in life to stay ahead. He can never keep a job and can never seemingly be stable. After seeing the true condition of her parent’s house, however, she quickly determines that she will need help to prepare her parent’s house for sale. After all, it will need more than cosmetic fixes. She enlists the help of her brother Mark. And the two quickly discover that the house has other plans and doesn’t want to be sold.
As Louise and Mark begin to sort through their parents' possessions and their home, strange things start to happen. For example, doors slam shut without anyone shutting it. Unexplained noises echo throughout the house. And Louise starts to think that her mom’s puppet collection might play a part in the supernatural activity around the home.
Together, Louise and Mark try to discover more about the home’s history. And eventually, they discover that the home has a dark secret. They discover that their father was conducting research on a strange ancient artifact which had the power to grant any wish. The artifact still remained in the house and caused strange and occasionally dangerous things to happen to Louise and Mark’s parents.
As Louise and Mark try to unravel the mystery of the artifact, they are forced to confront their past and their relationship with each other. As the duo clean out their parents’ home and contend with the supernatural, they learn more about themselves and learn more about their relationship. They also confront their personal demons and start to grieve the loss of their parents.
In the end, Louise and Mark succeed in breaking the curse of the artifact. But they also discover that their connection to their parents and their childhood home is deeper than they once had thought. Ultimately, they decide to keep the house in the family and turn it into a museum to show the world more about who their parents were and some of their interests.
