How to Sell a Haunted House Character List

Louise

Louise is Poppy's mother and Mark's sister. She currently resides in California and is estranged from her brother. She is also devoted to her family, as evidenced by her willingness to drop everything and fly across the country to settle her parents’ estate. Louise is also a survivor—from a young age, she had to deal with her mother's mental health issues and her brother's favoritism, and she learned to cope and move on. Her bravery in the face of danger, such as when she braved the attic to find out what was causing the house's strange energy, and when she stood up to the demonic squirrels that were attacking her, demonstrates her strength even more.

Mark

Mark is the brother of Louise who lives in Charleston. He is portrayed as a confused and troubled character, who has been trying to make sense of his chaotic life. Mark has been having trouble getting good jobs. He is strongly affected by his parents' death since he was their favorite. Mark is struggling to understand why he has been left with the responsibility of selling their house. Mark is loyal and devoted to his family, and he is willing to put his own needs aside to take care of his family. Despite his chaotic past, Mark is determined to help Louise to sell the house and earn the money they need. He is also courageous, as he is willing to confront the darkness and uncertainties of their childhood home.

Poppy

Poppy is Louise's daughter, who she leaves with her ex while she goes to Charleston to deal with her parents' death. She is a smart and precocious five-year-old with a lot of personalities. Poppy is an independent girl who loves to help her mom with the housework. She is also very brave, as she does not show any fear when it comes to the creepy puppets and dolls of the house. Poppy is also very protective of her mother, as she is always trying to cheer her up and make her feel better. She is a very compassionate child and loves to help people, which is why she is so eager to help her mom and her Uncle Mark in selling the haunted house.

Louise’s mother

The book describes Louise's mother as a folk artist and puppeteer who loved making handmade puppets and dolls. She was a hardworking woman with a talent for creating one-of-a-kind and fascinating works of art. She was a talented artist who spent countless hours creating dolls and puppets for her children and herself. Despite her drive and creativity, she was also a little selfish; while she adored her children, she had a habit of favoring Mark over Louise, resulting in a strained relationship between the two siblings. She was a strict mother who expected her children to work hard and take charge of their own lives. Unfortunately, she died alongside her husband in a car accident.

Louise’s ex

He also lives in California. He is responsible and supportive as seen when he stayed back with Poppy when Louise had to fly back home for the parent’s funeral. Despite having broken up with Louise, he is mature about it and loves Poppy very much.
