What would you have done if you were put in Padmini's shoes in this section?

Some students may feel compelled to answer that they wouldn't also try to commit suicide. At the same time, however, such students are likely to be cognizant of how difficult it would be for Padmini to continue to make her way in the absence of her husband and his best friend. As she mentions in her initial reaction, society would probably not look favorably upon her for what happened—and she might even be blamed. This question is a good way to get students to grapple with the dilemma faced by Padmini in this situation, calling to mind the importance of gender roles in this period in India.
