Guru Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Red

As a young man, Guru is able to pick the cup from the man hustling in the street with the three red balls and take all of his money. This is a symbol that Guru is able to see the world in a way that others cannot.

No Tie

Guru does not wear a tie while he works for Shell. This is a symbol that he does not belong to the traditional corporate structure.

Morning Train

Sujata goes on the train with Guru for Bombay in the morning light. This is a symbol that their love does not need to be kept secret.

Golf

Guru is told by Contractor that if he puts the golf ball in the hole he will give him membership to trade. Instead of using the club he walks the ball over to the hole and places it in. It is a symbol of his industriousness of thought.

Newspaper

The newspaper publishes Guru's grievance with Contractor. This is a symbol that his voice with be heard.
